I spend a lot of time in airports. I spend even more time in the air, in hotels, restaurants, rental cars, and in countries around the world that a lot of people only get to dream about – and I love my life! In my position as President of Global Sales and Marketing for Addison, Texas-based anti-aging skincare and wellness solutions company Nerium International, I get to see for myself the global impact that network marketing has on people around the world.

When I’m not spending time with my wife and children or seeking the next outdoor adventure, I’m 100 percent committed to the work I do for this company. In 1946, Viktor Frankl wrote a book about his experiences in an Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. His story, like so many others, is tragic, but his message is uplifting. Despite horrific circumstances, Frankl concluded in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, that the last of the human freedoms is the remarkable ability to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances — “to choose one’s own way.” These words have haunted me for some time but not in the way you may think.

You see, I can say with confidence that the people closest to me — my family, peers, and friends — think of me as a happy and positive person. That’s just who I am. As CEO, Co-Founder and Editorial Director of Live Happy magazine, which focuses on positive psychology, my personal and professional mission is to help others realize how simple daily acts of kindness can improve their lives. Sure, some people will say that there’s more to life than seeking endless joy and happiness. I disagree. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once expressed that happiness is the sense and purpose of life — the entire finality of existence, and I’m on board with his philosophy 100 percent! For this reason, I’m passionate about leading Live Happy, and I’m thrilled to share my message with you.

How to Find Your Inner Joy

In case we haven’t met face to face, my name is Deborah Heisz (but you can call me Deb!), and I would like to share with you three tips on how to bring your inner joy with you wherever you may go. You see, I’ve always experienced a tenacious curiosity and unquenchable thirst for learning — it keeps me awake and open to the unexpected. What I expect of myself is to tackle each day with a level of positivity, gratefulness, and happiness that’s obvious to the people I surround myself with. My good friend and Chief Marketing Officer at Nerium, Amber Olson Rourke, always says that you’re the average of the five people you surround yourself with. Now that’s the truth! I make the choice to surround myself with people who I can learn from, establish meaningful relationships with, and most importantly, people I can laugh and share a positive life with. Let’s start with three tips that I think will have the most impact on your life in the shortest amount of time.

1. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude: Rourke suggests reprogramming your brain to think in more positive ways. Keeping a gratitude journal and writing down all the little things you are thankful for will help to train your brain to recognize all the positive aspects of your life instead of wasting energy on the negative parts. You can change your mindset to become a more positive person which will also make you a happier one! Let’s give it a try. 2. Meditate on it: Many studies have revealed how the practice of calming mind and body, i.e. meditation, can help increase focus and resilience to stress. Regular meditation trains your body and mind to improve psychological balance, handle illness and boost overall health and well-being. It’s essential to remember that regular meditation focuses on the interactions between the brain, mind, body, and behavior. Finding your balance here will help you find peace of mind and tranquility of the soul. Although, if you know me, you’ll know that I would certainly prefer a good baseball game to yoga and meditation…but the truth is that I don’t know one person who is both successful and happy who doesn’t take the time to reflect on their past and future for 10 to 15 minutes a day—focusing on what matters to you the most.
3. Giving back works: It’s my opinion that giving back is one of the most selfish things you can do. Do you agree? It sounds weird, right? Well, think about it. By volunteering your time, skills or donating money and other materials, you’re making yourself feel good. The joy of giving back helps us to feel that we have a purpose and a mission, and more importantly, what we do makes a difference in someone else’s life. Realizing your actions positively impact another person’s life, will for sure be one of the most rewarding feelings you’ll ever experience. You will feel alive—guaranteed! Nerium International Vice President of Marketing Patricia Finn shares her key piece of skincare advice for your 20s, 30s, and 40s.

 

By the time I graduated from college, I was excited to start building a strong and fulfilling career. I’ve always been driven – especially about issues concerning my career, my health, and my passions. One passion I’ve actually been lucky enough to turn into a career: my long-time obsession with skincare. I can remember my love of skincare products beginning in high school. I fought oily and acne-prone skin, so researching skincare options and testing products at home became a favorite (and necessary) pass time. While learning how to clear up my skin issues, I began to learn about ingredients, product aesthetics, chemistry and how to read a product label. From that point on, I was hooked. My hobby turned into finding products I loved and customizing my own skin care regimens that I could stick with. I realized early on your skin is one of your most important assets. I understood that you have to take care of your skin sooner rather than later so that in the long run, it continues to look vibrant and healthy. The good news is that to do so, you don’t have to use hundreds of products. And different ages usually experience different skin concerns, which require different types of products. With all that in mind, I’ve highlighted key tips for taking care of your skin in your 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Skin in Your 20s

In your twenties, it’s super important to start cleansing your face morning and night with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Cleansing your skin in the morning preps your skin; it provides you with a clean canvas on which to apply your skincare products and then makeup (if that’s your thing). Cleansing your skin in the evening is essential to remove your makeup and the urban pollution your skin has been exposed to during the day. Always remember, never go to sleep with makeup on!

I lived in New York City during my twenties and had many late nights. No matter how tired I was, I always washed my face before bed. Why? 3 Tips on How to Incorporate Gratitude into Your Life

I love this time of year — it reminds us to be grateful and produces an air of thankfulness. However, to cultivate an attitude of gratitude that lasts beyond the holiday season, we must commit to ongoing habits that help us see life through the lenses of gratitude. For example, regularly expressing a simple, heartfelt ‘thank you’ will leave you feeling happier, more enthusiastic, and with a more positive outlook on life. New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur, and former professional Arena League football player Lewis Howes writes, “if you concentrate on what you have, you’ll always have more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough.”

Let’s chat about my three tips for cultivating an attitude of gratitude:

1. Train your brain: It’s easy to take what you have for granted. What’s more, people become indifferent to hearing ‘count your blessings’ or ‘be thankful for what you have’. In an online parenting magazine, I read this, “I hadn’t quite realized it then, but I had defaulted to a person who was constantly unhappy about what I didn’t have instead of being happy about what I did.” The truth is, with a little bit of effort, you can change the way you think. You can change your mindset – consciously recognize the importance of your blessings until doing so becomes natural. E.g., I’m grateful for cooler weather, I’m grateful for a safe commute, I’m grateful for being home in time to say goodnight to my daughter. What are you grateful for? Think about it and write down daily at least three things you’re grateful for in a gratitude journal. This one simple, continuous act will help you break the cycle of cynical thinking. You can become a glass-half-full type of person that sees a situation with more positivity even in moments of despair! Imagine that!! Once you realize how good your life is, you’ll truly experience joy and happiness.
2. Say Thank You: It’s so easy for us to focus on the material things in life that we forget to look around and notice the people closest to us. One of my favorite quotes is by writer and philosopher Albert Schweitzer. He said, “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” Who has rekindled the spark within you? More importantly, does that person or persons know how much you appreciate them and how grateful you are for having them in your life? If you’re hesitating, pick up your cell and text, call or email, or — better yet — walk up to that person and give them a sincere ‘thank you’. Remember, you are an average of the five people you surround yourself with – so it’s wise to surround yourself with people who will challenge you, who will respect you, you will support you, and who will love you.
3. Give back: Sometimes, all it takes is a trip to the grocery store to remind me of how lucky I am to have the means to buy food for my family to help keep them happy and healthy. Many people don’t have access to the basics – food, water, medical services, education – how lucky are we? For this reason, I support giving back. Not only are you impacting the life of another person but your own life becomes valuable to someone else. That’s an amazing feeling and one of the reasons why we established The Nerium Ripple Foundation – a charitable organization devoted to the vision of Making People Better on a global basis.Psychologist and head of the Center for the Study of the Individual and Society at the University of Minnesota Mark Snyder found that people who donate some of their time to a worthy cause tend to have a higher self-esteem, psychological well-being, and happiness. “All of these things go up as their feelings of social connectedness goes up, which in reality, it does.” I also read about a health and volunteering study that revealed: “96 percent of people who have volunteered over the 12 months said volunteering enriches their sense of purpose?” Giving back is the perfect opportunity to invite friends or loved ones to spend quality time with — it’s the perfect time to connect with your support group!
